A useful brief does not have to be long. It needs to give the team enough context to recommend the right work and identify what is outside the scope.

1. Explain the business goal

Describe the change you want to make. “We need a new website” is a deliverable. “Customers cannot understand our services or request a quote easily” explains the problem the website needs to solve.

2. Describe the audience

Who needs to see the work? Include the market, location, customer questions and the action you want them to take. If you serve several audiences, identify which comes first.

3. List what you need

For a website, list the pages and functions. For branding, list the materials and file formats. For video, include the source footage, target length and platforms. Distinguish essentials from ideas that can wait.

4. Share useful references

Provide a few public links and explain what you like about each: the hierarchy, tone, navigation or visual direction. References help communicate a preference; they are not instructions to copy another business.

5. Be open about constraints

State the approximate budget and currency, required launch date, approval process and available assets. Mention any integrations or account restrictions early. A fixed deadline may require a smaller first phase.

6. Define a useful outcome

Choose a result that can be assessed, such as visitors finding a service, completing a form or understanding your offer. Avoid promising a sales result that depends on factors outside the project.
